  • Making exceptions to your uncluttered standards
Making exceptions to uncluttered standards can become a slippery slope. If we don’t keep a watchful eye on our stuff, eventually our entire homes and offices are filled with clutter again. This is especially true in places where clutter can easily hide — closets, cupboards, and toy bins.
As a result, I have created a new uncluttered standard for my exceptions. It states: “If getting rid of the object causes more distraction than having the object, I keep it.”
  • Unitasker Wednesday: The Egg Cuber
I think that this week’s unitasker may actually be a non-tasker. Ever since reader Penni sent this Egg Cuber to me, I have tried to imagine why someone would want square eggs — and I have yet to come up with a reason.
  • Excerpt: Being a social butterfly
Below is another excerpt from my book Unclutter Your Life in One Week — this time on how to have and manage a social life in this busy world.
  • Excerpt: How many bath linens do you need?
Below is the final excerpt from my book Unclutter Your Life in One Week we plan to run on the site — this time on how to determine how many towels and washcloths you need in your linen closet.

Tour des Arts by Forma 6

Tour des Arts by Forma 6

Photographer Patrick Miara has sent us his photographs of this art centre in Les Herbiers by French architects Forma 6.

Tour des Arts by Forma 6

Called Tour des Artes, the building houses music and dance schools.

Tour des Arts by Forma 6

The facade is clad in golden copper-aluminium alloy panels.

Tour des Arts by Forma 6

Here’s some more information from the architects (in French):

Tour des Arts by Forma 6

Tour des Arts by Forma 6

Tour des Arts by Forma 6

VOLUMETRIE :

Tour des Arts by Forma 6

Tour des Arts by Forma 6

Tour des Arts by Forma 6

Tour des Arts by Forma 6

Tour des Arts by Forma 6

Tour des Arts by Forma 6

Tour des Arts by Forma 6

Tour des Arts by Forma 6

Tour des Arts by Forma 6

Tour des Arts by Forma 6

Unique LA

Indie design powerhouses join forces for a new shop in L.A.'s furniture marketplace H.D. Buttercup uniquela1.jpg

As a one-stop furnishings marketplace, H.D. Buttercup's enormous Culver City showroom filled with furnishings, art, rugs, bedding and accessories leaves most interiors junkies wanting for little. Last Friday saw the launch of the one thing the complex might be missing with a new 3,700 square-foot section bringing together the indie fashion of Apartment 3 and designers from the gift fair Unique LA. We checked in with Sonja Rasula, who founded Unique in 2008, and Kristin Knauff of Apartment 3 while they were setting up their H.D. Buttercup digs.

uniquela2.jpg

Originally founded in 2003 as a boutique on La Brea, Apartment 3 has developed into a full-service fashion production company. Unique LA, one of the biggest shows for independent crafts in the country, features wares made by area designers and encourages the consumption of local products. Together at H.D. Buttercup, the two brands have created a forum to shop for children's and baby products, clothing, art, accessories, edibles, gifts and more.

uniquela3.jpg

In store, Rasula is proud to offer designs by Sub_urban riot, Chemline, 28 Squares, Eva Franco, sugarhigh + Lovestoned , Detroit Sprinkles, Maiden Voyage, Misha Lulu, Rock Socks and others. We spotted the hand-woven scarves by Loomlab that interpret Braille, computer circuits, and QR coding into the pattern and color palette. The Original Record Wallets fashion leather and nylon into billfolds sporting images of Prince, The Clash or astronauts.

uniquela4.jpg

Apartment 3 collections span denim, bowties, vintage clothing and footwear, including exclusive pieces from Smoke & Mirrors that hang on one of the industrial metal racks. Both companies plan to showcase many of their favorite designers in a carefully-curated collection of merchandise.

Label Love – Viktor & Rolf S/S 2011

imageWhen one anticipates a Viktor & Rolf show, it's expected that their will be outrageous pieces, crazy silhouettes and unexpected details that will challenge you ideas on conventional fashion, or at the very least, make you sit up and take notice. Their latest S/S 2011 runway collection was no exception, with pieces seemingly inspired by Alice in Wonderland on even more hallucinogens and in the midst of a huge Mad-Hatter hosted wedding reception.

Vertical striped of bold blue and shiny red, oversized shoulders, exaggerated asymmetry and multiple, enlarged cuffs and other whimsical details made the collection truly unique and gave it a healthy dose of fun, which is signature for Viktor & Rolf. But once you get past the humor and eccentricities, it's obvious that these garments are full of intricate details and true skill and talent in the construction. Personal loves were the shirt dresses in varying styles and the frothy use of fabric and ruching. Satin fabrics were made into crazy wedding-style gowns that looked appropriate for the weddings of the likes of Rihanna or Lady Gaga, especially the finale piece.

Viktor & Rolf S/S 2011 collection is one piece of art after another and while many of the ensembles seemed too outrageous for everday wear, many of the pieces, when separated, are completely wearable for the fashion conscious! Click the slideshow to see some Viktor & Rolf S/S 2011 faves!

It’s been a fun Halloween week here at Unclutterer, and we hope you have a terrific time celebrating the holiday officially tomorrow. In the meantime, enjoy these links related to uncluttering, simple living, and some randomly cool things:

  • Recent bride Naomi Selden wrote about how to create a clutter-free wedding registry on D. Allison Lee’s Organize to Revitalize blog. If you’re getting hitched, this is a wonderful resource.

  • I’m drooling over this Stackable Oven-To-Table Cookware that was featured on Apartment Therapy’s The Kitchn. I don’t typically make eight casseroles at a time, so I have no need for it. But, I’m happy to know it exists.
